The Situation

Our company, eTelic Inc., developed a tuitional assistance application portal for the VA National Guard (VaNG), to help their service members apply for and receive state tuition assistance. Although the application has been used for a few years now, our clients noticed that it wasn't reaching as many people as possible. Only a fraction of the eligible and in-education service members were applying for state tuition assistance. Further, with frequent budget changes and regulation updates, it became hard for those that were applying for assistance to understand how much they could receive and how to advance through the whole process. This is where the idea for a landing site for STAP was born. With a landing site, our clients could send just one link to their users that contained all the important notices, regulations, application processes, contact information, and link to the actual application portal.

The Process

I began by building a basic website on Webflow, including dedicated pages for contact, information about the program, and FAQs. Since our clients are a branch of the defense department, I knew the tone of the website should be professional, serious, and patriotic. This lead me to a simple, and yes... predictable, color palette of red, blue, and white. But, I wanted this to be a website that VaNG Service Members were excited to use. So, in the hero, I decided to use a picture from an important memorial event lead by the VaNG, featuring active service members. Along the lines of "excited to use", I also wanted it to be pretty straight forward. On the home page, I featured the three different application periods, with the current one highlighted to differentiate from the rest. Any urgent updates are listed above the application period section, and important information (stuff that stays the same all the time) are placed below. Additionally, right in the hero section, the users are given a button directing them to the application portal so they never have to leave this one landing site to find all the information they need.

The Outcome

The STAP landing site has increased applications and reduced the amount of redundant questions directed towards our clients! In the "How to Apply" page, I created an easy to understand diagram of the application process accompanied by a link to the full length document created by our clients. Further, we tried to capture most questions users had in the FAQ section. This enabled our users to answer most of their own questions, only reaching out to our clients with the more pressing items. Our clients have expressed their appreciation for this website numerous times, citing the ease with which they are able to update policies and send our notices. They no longer have to worry about whether they sent all the notices to all the necessary people; they can simply update the website and everything is done in one fell swoop.
